Last year in March my husband and I found out to our delight
that I was expecting. It was a wonderful time in our lives. I was working
as a Massage Therapist, which I loved, and the company my husband worked for
was diversifying meaning more responsibilities for him and, we hoped, the raise
he had been promised.
Then in early June my husband was fired. Turns out the owner
had been sinking all his profits into the new venture which was already in
trouble. In response he started firing
the employees to save on payroll, my husband was one of the first to be fired
without warning.
Things got worse when my husband filed for unemployment as it
was disputed by the manager who, despite witness, claimed my husband had
quit. His claim was denied in August.
He wasn’t granted an appeal hearing until two weeks before
my due date. Much to our relief he won.
I gave birth to a wonderful daughter a few days after she
was due.
So here we are a year later: I am juggling being a working
mother, my husband is still desperately seeking a new job while trying to hold
down the home front. This isn’t what we envisioned a year ago but we are trying
to make it work.
